Occupation of Izmir by Greece

Izmir was occupied by Greek forces in 1919 and recaptured by Turkish forces under the command of Mustafa Kemal( Kemal Ataturk), on September 9, 1922. Three days after the recapture of the Turks, a large part of the city of Izmir was destroyed by fire.

Izmir, with its wide streets and buildings built since 1924, is located in the eastern bay and the heights and ridges of the south. The Cordelia area was once the city on the other side of the bay, but now it forms the northwestern part of the city.

Today, the Konak district is the commercial center of Izmir. The city's residential neighborhoods are in Karantina and Guzaliali in the southwest and in Ashraf Pasha.
